We started class with hard shoe drills focused on pointing toes, locking legs, and staying up on toes. These drills included hopping down the floor with front leg pointed in front, switches, kick and downs to both hornpipe and treble jig music, and clicks. Following drills, we ran hard shoe steps one at a time and then soft shoe steps one at a time. Dancers we’re asked to focus on applying what we worked on drills to their steps. These drills were more difficult than I think the dancers anticipated, and I recommended that they incorporate these into their at home practice as well. Each dancer demonstrated improvements in their technique when running their steps to music, and were reminded that this should be a continual focus until it becomes second nature.
